All clear given after hazmat spill at Sylvania nursing home

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) – The all clear has been given after hazardous material spill was reported at the Kingston Care Center of Sylvania just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

An employee of the care center says a bleach based cleaner was accidentally mixed with Lime-A-Way in a food preparation area on the second floor of the facility.  An employee immediately diluted the mixture, but the area was evacuated as a precaution. 

The food prep area was isolated and it appears no patients were ever in danger.

Verizon Wireless expanding 4G in Toledo area

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - On May 17, Verizon Wireless is expanding its 4GLTE network to communities surrounding Toledo.

The expanded coverage area around Toledo includes Whitehouse, Monclova, Woodville, Gibsonburg, Holland and the Toledo Airport.

Verizon says the 4G network is up to 10 times faster than 3G. It launched in Toledo in July of 2011 as well as the surrounding communities of Sylvania, Oregon, Maumee, Perrysburg, Waterville and Bowling Green.

It can be used for smart phones as well as broadband Internet access from home.

Restaurant Ratings: This week's honor roll

(Toledo News Now) - Five eating establishments received zero violations this week during Lucas County health inspections.

An ice cream shop on Monclova Road takes top honors this week for one of the cleanest kitchens in Lucas County. Freeze Daddy's owner, Ron Loeffler, says its biggest moneymaker is ice cream. All 14 flavors need to be kept below 41 degrees, and they are. The temperatures of the hot dogs, cheese sauce and milk were all safe as well.

The owner says it is his third season in business.

Sylvania School Board fills administrative positions

SYLVANIA, OH (PRESS RELEASE) - As the end of the school year approaches, the Sylvania Board of Education has unanimously agreed to hire several administrative replacements for retiring principals and district administrative directors. Retiring this spring are Dr. Elaine Chapman, Director of Disability Services, and Bob Biglin, principal of Stranahan Elementary.

Michalene Sujaritchan, Ph.D. has been hired as the Director of Disability Services replacing retiring Dr. Chapman. She was given a two-year contract beginning on August 1, 2012 for $97,411 per year.

Komen seeking nominations for race honorees

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) –The Northwest Ohio Susan G. Koman Foundation is currently accepting nominations for  the "In Celebration" and "In Memory" honors for the 2012 Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure. 

The "In Celebration" title honors a survivor whose courage, determination, and strength in the face of breast cancer inspires us all.  The "In Memory" title honors a woman who has been lost to breast cancer.

Sylvania high schools could lose school resource officers

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) - School resource officers have been part of Sylvania High Schools for quite some time. Now, a city committee is taking a closer look at the officers and whether they belong in the budget.

Both Northview and Southview High Schools each have their own full-time school resource officer. The principal at Southview said they have had an SRO since he started, and he would hate to see him go.
